Take advantage of it.
Instead of asking every vendor to give the same product demo, ask questions that reveal what it's actually like to work with them. Here are five we think are worth asking.
Can your system support my membership structure?
Many associations manage companies, chapters, firms, or organizations, not just individual members. How a platform handles those relationships affects everything from billing and renewals to permissions and reporting.
How does your QuickBooks Online integration actually work?
"Integration" can mean a lot of things. Ask what data syncs automatically, what still requires manual work, and what your accounting team can expect day to day.
What does onboarding really involve?
Every implementation takes work. Ask what your staff will own, what the vendor will own, and how success is measured along the way.
What happens after go-live?
Implementation is only the beginning. Ask how support works, who you'll work with, and how the relationship continues after launch.
How do customers influence your roadmap?
Software should continue improving long after you become a customer. Ask how ideas become new features and how customer feedback shapes future development.
Those five questions can tell you more in fifteen minutes than an hour-long demo.
We asked our VP of Engagement, Mike, what advice he'd give someone walking the expo floor.
"The ASAE floor can be intimidating. Figure out the top 2-3 challenges your team is facing and find partners that can address them. Try to have better conversations, not more conversations."
One thing still surprises him.
"I routinely meet with people who have overly manual processes and are not aware of it. I love turning 'we've always done it this way' into 'there has to be a better way.'"
And what is he looking forward to most?
"AI is everywhere. I'm interested in hearing where associations are actually using it effectively to save time and better serve their members, not just because it's the shiny new toy."
